Ziv-Av engineers mechanics for Radiaction’s radiation shield
Medical teams are constantly exposed to radiation while in surgery. In order to shield themselves, they wear heavy lead gowns that provide partial protection –potentially causing life-threatening illness, as well as damaging the back bones. The innovative Radiaction solution was to cover the radiation source rather than the personnel, but this has proven difficult because radiation devices need to be maneuverable for scanning the patient at all angles.
The Radiaction’s cover uses composite tiles to obstruct the radiation source with shielding walls that surround the device and move with it, while it photographs the patient at any angle. This confines the radiation to the patient’s body and reduces exposure to medical personnel.
Ziv-Av also produced a prototype of the cover device – one of several services Ziv-Av provides in addition to design. Engineers ensured the prototype was functioning at the highest level, optimizing it to help reduce radiation by 97% or more.
